A little bit of cash can go a long, long way, if you plan carefully. A kitchen facelift on a budget is perfectly possible, and you can achieve some pretty spectacular results too! Here are our top five tips and ideas for doing a kitchen makeover on a budget:

1 – Get busy with the paintbrush

The easiest way to freshen up any kitchen has to be simply grabbing a tin of paint and a paintbrush – and get decorating! This is something you can do yourself, and whether you go for a full makeover or just give the woodwork a lick of brilliant white gloss, you can transform your kitchen in a day with a little bit of effort.

Make sure you do your preparation first though - you can’t beat good, old-fashioned ‘sugar soap’ to wash years of grease off the walls. Once the walls are dry you should be able to paint straight on top, but if there are any cracks then make sure you fill them first and allow the filler to completely dry before you start painting.

2 – Change the cupboard doors and drawers

The largest surface area in your kitchen (apart from your worktops – we’ll get to those shortly!) are your cupboard doors and drawer fronts. These are the ‘aesthetic’ aspects of your kitchen, and they’re also the bits that take all the damage! Knocks, kicks and scratches can make them look very tired, very quickly, and it’s even worse if you have pets or kids. Changing the kitchen doors and drawers is a great way to create a bespoke look at a fraction of the cost of a complete kitchen replacement. It also saves you something else that’s just as valuable – time! Whereas a kitchen replacement will take weeks, changing the cupboard doors and drawers can be done in a couple of days, keeping fuss and inconvenience to an absolute minimum.

3 – Replace your door handles and trims

If you have hinges on display these too can be replaced (just make sure the screw holes line up!). For a few pounds and a handful of ironmongery, you can brighten up any kitchen.

4 – Fabulous floors – lino is making a comeback!

Flooring in kitchens has to be practical as well as good looking, which is why the go-to default is tiles. However, if you have a large area of flooring and you want to try something different then check out the different lino floorings that are now available. Sturdy, resistant to spills and relatively cheap, lino can make an interesting change from the usual checkerboard pattern of tiles (which can be surprisingly expensive!).

5 – Cover up those tired old worktops

Finally, your worktops also see a lot of wear and tear in their lives, and eventually can start to look a little shabby. They can also harbour germs and bacteria, especially if the surface is damaged. Rather than replacing the entire top you can now get granite ‘shells’ for a fraction of the cost of a solid granite or quartz top that give you that instant ‘wow’ effect and are tailored to simply fit over the top of your existing surfaces.
