We all want the heart of our home to look its best. But our kitchens put up with far more ‘wear and tear’ than the other rooms in the house, and as such will need to be renovated, redecorated and refurbished more frequently. One of the quickest ways to breathe new life into your kitchen is to replace the kitchen cupboard doors. But are they all the same size? And should you go for bespoke kitchen doors rather than the cheaper, off-the-shelf alternative from your DIY store? Here is a quick list of FAQs to help you decide.

Q: Why shouldn’t I buy off-the-shelf doors?

A: Even if your kitchen is a ‘generic’ standard design, after a while its dimensions will change due to the effect of humidity and heat in the atmosphere. Wood and laminates tend to flex and change, even if it’s by a couple of millimetres. That means of-the-shelf doors from a DIY shop, even if they come from the same range as your original kitchen, will not fit perfectly.

Q: But they’re cheaper…

A: They may be cheaper than other alternatives, but you won’t get the fit, the look and the perfection you really want. Cheap kitchen doors are really a false economy – the quality is often poor and they won’t last as long as bespoke doors. As the saying goes – buy cheap, buy twice!

Q: What if I have an older property?

A: Older properties rarely have ‘standard’ kitchens, especially if you have a cottage that dates back several centuries. So a standard cabinet door will simply not fit properly, and could start sagging on its hinges very quickly after fitting.

Q: How much will replacing kitchen doors cost?

A: Replacing an entire kitchen from the ground up can cost tens of thousands, and if money really is no object then you could end up paying as much as £20,000. By comparison, replacing kitchen doors and drawer fronts while keeping the basic units intact is a much more affordable alternative, creating the ‘new kitchen’ wow factor for a much lower price.

Q: What does ‘bespoke’ really mean?

A: Bespoke kitchen doors are specifically made to fit your exact measurements. They are not generic sizes, nor are they simply ‘standard’ doors with a bit trimmed off! Your bespoke kitchen cabinet doors will be unique to your kitchen and ensure a perfect fit.

Q: Will there be a lot of mess?

A: Because you are keeping your units intact, there will be very little mess at all. Kitchen refurbishment companies can also take your old doors away for recycling, so you don’t have to worry about clearing up afterwards.

Q: Will I be able to keep the layout of my kitchen intact?

A: Yes, and for most people this is a real bonus. Changing your kitchen cupboard doors means that you are simply replacing the aesthetic part of your kitchen, and not impacting on its functionality in any way.

Q: What styles are available?

A: The range of styles available is huge, from traditional wood and cottage style doors, through to ultra-modern glass, polished steel or vinyl. You should, however, think about the rest of your home décor and choose a style that fits in with the layout of your home. So try to avoid putting an ultra-modern, minimalist style into an old property, for example.

Q: Should I go for hardwood kitchen doors, or laminates?

A: The choice is entirely yours! Hardwood doors last longer, but laminates and vinyl are great if you have a young family or have difficulty reaching up and down to clean, as they’re easy to simply wipe clean.

Q: How long will it take to fit new cupboard doors?

A: From the moment the fitters arrive to install your cupboard doors to the moment they leave shouldn’t take more than a day (unless you have other work planned too, such as replacing worktops). So it’s quick, mess-free, and much cheaper than replacing your entire kitchen.
